Provincial Exam:

SEMESTER 2: Monday June 27, 2011 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Provincial Exams cannot be rescheduled – all students in the province write the exam at the same time on the same day. Exams missed for any reason will need to be written at the next scheduled provincial examination time.
Course Outline:
Processes of Science (integrated throughout the other sections)
o Demonstrate safe procedures
o Perform experiments using the scientific method
o Represent and interpret information in graphical form
o Demonstrate scientific literacy
o Demonstrate ethical, responsible, cooperative behaviour
o Describe the relationship between scientific principles and technology
o Demonstrate competence in use of technologies specific to investigative procedures
and research
Life Science (estimated time 20-25 hours)
o Explain the interaction of abiotic and biotic factors within an ecosystem
o Assess the potential impacts of bioaccumulation
o Explain various ways in which natural populations are altered or kept in equilibrium
Physical Science – Chemistry, Radioactivity, & Physics (40-45 hours)
o Differentiate between atoms, ions, molecules using knowledge of structure and components
o Classify substances as acids, bases, or salts, based on characteristics, name, and formula
o Distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds
o Analyse chemical reactions, including reference to conservation of mass and rate of reaction
o Explain radioactivity using modern atomic theory
o Explain relationship of displacement and time interval to velocity for objects in uniform motion
o Demonstrate the relationship between velocity, time interval, and acceleration
Earth & Space Science (estimated time 20-25 hours)
o Explain the characteristics and sources of thermal energy
o Explain the effects of thermal energy transfer within the atmosphere
o Evaluate possible causes of climate change and its impact on natural systems
o Analyse the processes and features associated with plate tectonics
o Demonstrate knowledge of evidence that supports plate tectonic theory
